History of the Company
ŽS Brno, a.s. is a direct successor of the state enterprise Železnicní stavitelství Brno. This enterprise was established in 1952 as a specialized company operating in the area of railroad construction. Its major responsibility was provision for repairs, reconstruction and modernization of railroads in Czechoslovakia. Železnicní stavitelství Brno was part of the production and economic unit Železnicné stavebníctvo Bratislava from 1971. In the 1980s, Železnicní stavitelství Brno had about 3,200 employees.
Of the major projects executed by the state enterprise during the above mentioned period, the following should be noted in particular:
extensive construction units for construction of a double track line Ceské Budejovice – Veselí nad Lužnicí

In 1991, the production and economic unit Železnicné stavebníctvo Bratislava was cancelled and Železnicní stavitelství Brno became an independent state enterprise for the period of three quarters of that year. As of April 1, 1992, the state enterprise was transformed to a joint stock company which was included in the first wave of the voucher privatization. After the privatization's completion, the enterprise had more than 4,000 individual owners. In 1993, the Company decided to change its name to ŽS Brno, a.s. for business reasons.
In 1993, the Czech Government decided to implement a project of railway corridor modernization. Thanks to its long experience in railway construction, the Company managed to become an important supplier of this work. ŽS Brno, a.s. is a general supplier of several parts of the construction work connected with railway corridor modernization and track optimization:

Since the commencement of the railway corridor project, the Company has gone through a dramatic development. The Company's turnover prior to the corridor project was below CZK 600 million; currently, the Company reports a turnover of almost CZK 8.5 billion.
The Company also experienced a huge internal reorganization: the original business units had been gradually associated into divisions. The major internal change occurred in early 2000: four plants were established. The plants' objective is to provide for the development of the respective market segments. thus, the plants perform sales, production and economic function in the following market segments:
